The third condition of the heart we find in (St. Mark 4) is the thorny heart: This is a heart which hears the word, but fails to produce because of three things: The cares of the world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the lust of other things. The person with the thorny heart has a lust problem; the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life. They always seem to want-want, and want. They can never have enough. They’re more concerned with what they want, what they feel and pleasing the flesh. The thorny heart person is always trying to find the next big thing that will produce riches for them only to discover it’s actually putting them further and further behind. It always seems to be about them and never about anyone else. They don’t mind hearing the word, but if the word challenges their lifestyle, if the word challenges many of their dreams or ideas, if it challenges their thought process, then the word becomes unfruitful to them. Thus, they would rather not hear it. The person with the thorny heart often has eyes bigger than their wallet which leads them to be way over their head in debt. God can’t seem to satisfy these types because they want yours-mine and all that the world has to offer. In fact, if they have to choose between God and material things, they will take the material things every time. Saints of God, I’m not saying there is anything wrong with having nice things because we all like nice stuff. However, don’t let the nice stuff have you or your relationship with God. Hence, this thorny heart would also miss heaven, because God would never seem to be enough for them on earth.
God Bless You
