There is a recurring theme flowing through the account of the crucifixion of Jesus in (Matt 27:39-44), the theme is “Come down from the cross”. As Jesus was hanging on the cross He was continually encouraged to come down from the cross. Those who passed by encouraged Him to do so, the chief priests, scribes and elders spoke the same thing, though mockingly. Even the thieves who were hanging from the cross on either side of Jesus said the same. We know He had the power to do so if He wanted to but I’m so glad He stayed on that cross; I’m so glad He finished the work.
As I read this passage I had to ask myself if I had the power to come off that cross and relieve myself of the pain and suffering would I have done it, especially after being encouraged to do so continually.
However, because Jesus made Himself of no reputation He stayed on the cross; because Jesus had a will to obey the Father to the fullest He stayed on the cross; because Jesus was selfless He stayed on the cross; because Jesus loved sinful man so much, with an understanding that they needed a savior He stayed on the cross. In fact, (Rom 5:8) says “But God commended His love toward us in while we were yet sinners Christ died for us”. We should thank God that Jesus didn’t make His life and death about Himself, but He made it about you and me. Thus, I would hate to think about where we would be if Jesus would have come down from the cross before the work was done. But because he loved us and because he knew the Father loved us he finished the work.
God Bless You.
