Search Us O God

(Psalm 139:23-24) “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me and know my thoughts: and see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way of everlasting.”

There aren’t too many Christians who would pray this prayer and really mean it. There aren’t too many Christians who really want God to shine the light of the Holy Spirit on their hearts for real. We don’t mind God dealing with the stuff on the surface of our heart; however, to go to the root of our hearts is another matter altogether. Hence, if we allow God to dig into the depths of our heart he may find some things we don’t want to deal with…such as past hurts; the bitterness and hatred that still live in our hearts because of what momma or daddy may have done to us. Some Christians are still holding things against people (often loved ones-because that’s where most of the hurt tends to come from) that they should have let go years ago, and they still believe they are okay with God.

Child of God, to pray the prayer of (Psalm 139:23-24) is to allow ourselves to become transparent before God that He might come in and reveal those hidden hurts within us that we still haven’t dealt with yet. It is to allow God to come in and show us those secret sins which we thought we had gotten past. It is to allow God to come in and show a wife that she hadn’t forgiven her husband for something he did, or the husband hadn’t forgiven the wife for something she did, and it’s causing a real strain on the marriage.

To pray this prayer is to open ourselves up so God might show us we haven’t forgiven the loved one for the verbal-emotional or even sexual abuse that may have been committed against us as a child. Thus, to ask God to search us is to say to God we are willing to make a radical change in our lives. When we ask God to search our hearts, He will show us the dark areas of our past and present, and bring them to the light at the right time. The truth is many of us may not have wanted to deal with the darkness of the past that continues to bind us. However, as a believer the time is right to receive our healing while the light of the Holy Spirit leads us to and through our past to our freedom.

God Bless You

Pastor Mason
