The New Testament Church looks very different today than the early Church. One of the things that’s noticeable when we look at the early church in the Book of Acts and the Church of today, is that they operated in much more signs and wonders than we do today. The Holy Spirit seem to manifest Himself with more evidence then than He does now, that’s not to say that He isn’t moving mightily today. However, there is a scripture that speaks volumes about where the body of Christ was as it pertained to their relationship with God back then; (Acts 9:31) says “then had the churches rest (peace) throughout all Judea, Galilee and Samaria, and were edified; and walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost were multiplied”.
The Church in that day had a fear of God that caused them to examine sin in their lives consistently and many Christians don’t have that same fear of God today. Thus we believe that we can live how we want to live and repent for our wrong doing, and somehow think that it is okay with God. They had such a fear of God that they didn’t wait for the preacher to edify, they built each other up. They trusted God, which is why they were able to rest in Him during a time when Christians were being killed and persecuted for their faith. This was not an easy time for them; they needed the glory of God in their lives desperately, as we desperately need him today. If we would only fear the Lord it would change a whole lot of things in the body of Christ for the better. We must maintain a healthy fear of God where it leads us to revere him in all we say and do.
